Question

Activity 1.3 Plotting a Point on a Map Using UTM Coordinates Name: Date: A Part of the USCS 7 5-minute topogrphic quadrangle map of Old Faithfal, Wyoming (2015), is reproduced in Fig. A131 ake the fol We are going to plot the location of the active vent of the Old Falthful gywei. As of mid-August 2015, the active vent vas located approximately at UTM coordinates 121 513671 mE 4923032 mN 16 km 4924000mN $14 23.4 ml Geyse Upper SpasmodicGeyser rite the Geyser Basin Geyser 6555 Hill Group-Anemone Geyser on ATE in ng old Old 4923000mN Faithfu $23 Geyser Blub 513000mE 514000mE Figure A1.3.1 1. Regarding a fist look at the map in Fig. A1.3.1 (a) What is the minimum easting on the map? mE. What edge of the map is bounded by the minimum casting (top, bouon, left, right), (b) What is the minimum northing on the map - mN. What edge of the map is bounded by the minimum northing (top, bottom. left, right)? (c) Is the central meridian for this zone to the east (right) or west (left) of this map area? (Refer to Fig. 1.5 for assistance.) 2 The yellow square that surrounds most of the map in Fig. A1.3.1 represents a horizontal area on the ground that is I kr by I km in dimension, so we can use a side of that square as a bar scale. (a) As accurately as you can, measure the length of a side of this square in cm; we'll use the variable name a3 for this length. as- (b) We will use the variable name 63 for the number of cm in I km. 65- (c) The fractional scale of this map can be found by dividing b5 by as we'll call that result s. The fractional scale is cm an a cample) on de map represens e5 length units of the same sort (em) on the ground. 24 25

Explanation / Answer

Answer : 1 :

(a) : The minimum easting of the map is found to be 513000 mE. Left edge bounded by minimum easting.

(b) : Minimum northing found to be 492300 mN. Bottom edge is bound by minimum northing.

(c) : the central meridian or reference projection meridian is on the West/left side of the map.

Part : 2 :

(a) : Length of side of square is 7 cm on map. Therefore, a5 is 7cm.

(b) : In 1 km there are 100000cm therefore, b5 = 100000 cm.

(c) : Dividing b5/a5 we will get 14285.71.

Which means e5 = 14285.71.

Therefore 1 cm on map represent 14285.71 cm on ground.
