Question
You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the football stadium parking lot in Buffalo; there is negligible friction between your feet and the ice. A friend throws you a 0.300-kg ball that is traveling horizontally at 10.0 m/s. Your mass is 77.0 kg. If you catch the ball, with what speed do you and the ball move afterward? Express your answer with the appropriate units. v = If the ball hits you and bounces off your chest, so afterward it is moving horizontally at 8.0 m/s in the opposite direction, what is your speed after the collision? Express your answer with the appropriate units. v =Explanation / Answer
Using the law of conservation of momentum .
initial = 0.3kg x 10.0 m/s
final = (77 + 0.3)kg x V
initial = final
............... V = 0.3 x 10 /77.3 = 0.0388 m/s
B) involves conservation taking account of directions (ans. No 1 hasn't ! )
initial = 0.3 x 10 = 3 kgm/s
final = (77kg x V) + (0.3kg x 8) = 77V - 2.4
now .. 3 = 77V - 2.4 ............. V = 5.4 /77 = 0.07 m/s
