Question

A diode has a potential drop of 5 V across it and is in series with a resistance R2 of 10 ohm these are in parallel with a Resistor R1 of 20 ohm (shown below). The total potential VO is 15 V DC; Given a DC power supply, can you determine the potential drop across R2 based on the information given? Explain why or why not. If so, calculate it. Given a DC power supply, is it possible to calculate the current across R1? Explain why or why not. If so, calculate it. Given a DC power supply, if the diode directive were reversed. can you determine the current across R1? Explain why or why not. If so, calculate it. Given a DC power supply. if they diode direction were the same as part c, can you determine the current across the diode? Explain why or why not? If so, calculate it.

Explanation / Answer

Potential drop across diode+ across R2=15

Drop across R2=15-5=10 volts

Current across R1=15/R1=0.75 A

If diode direction is reversed ,circuit will be open for R2

But current across R1=0.75 A

Current across diode=15/R2=1.5 A
