We know that Newton's law is very useful. Einstein did not take the ideas behind this experiment for granted. He noticed that mass plays two roles and called this the " Equivalence Principle". As you moved mass from the cart to the hange, the mass changes from playing only one role ( Inertia, since the pull of gravity is balanced) to playing two roles ( inertia and the pull of gravity on it that pulls the system). Explain it.

Weight of hanging mass m1 acts along the direction of motion so it plays two role inertia and cause of motion.

However weight of cart acts along -j and it moves along i so it doesn't have any role in affecting motion .so it plays only role of inertia.
