Question

The iris of the eye is a circular aperture that allows light to pass into the eye. A) For an iris with a radius of 0.35 cm, and for the visible light with wavelength 550 nm, what is the resolving angle, or limiting resolution, of the eye, based on Rayleigh’s criterion? B) In fact, the actual limiting resolution of the human eye is about four times poorer. (res= 4Rayleigth) What is the farthest distance s from a fence that you could stand and resolve two birds sitting on top if they are 15 cm apart?

Please Explain your thought process Step by Step, Thank you in Advance

Explanation / Answer

According to reiligh's criterion
for a circular aperture
sin(theta-r) = 1.22lambda/d
theta-r is the resolving angle
lambda = 550 nm
d = 0.35*2 cm
a. theta-r = 5.4922*10^-3 degrees
b. actual theta-r = 4*5.4922*10&^-3 = 0.02196 degrees
maximum distance =    r
theta-r = arc/radoius
0.02196 *pi/180 = 0.15/r
r = 234.843 m
