Question
Draw a profile toilustrate the shape of the land between points A and B as indicated in the map below (Figure 1). Note that the scale of the map is 1:5000. Please indicate if the map is a medium or small or large scale map (1 mark). The contour interval is 2 m. The vertical interval (VI) is 1cm-Sm. Once you have drawn the profile, please indicate on the profile based on the form of the contours and other sources from the Internet, the type of the two sport fields (A and B) (2 marks). The location on the map is the University of Zululand in Vulindlela close to Richard's Bay (12 marks for the profile). Total marks = 15. Keep with you, 1. a ruler which has cm divisions. 2. a graph sheet printed on plain paper or a a trasparent film with cm divisions 3. eraser 4. pencil and 5. a plain paper 6. college level geometry box. Procedure is as given below. First fold the map at the line of section AB. A horizontal line equal to AB line is drawn on plain paper which is used as base line. Place the folded map on this AB line and positions of various contour lines is demarcated. Starting from these points, vertical lines are drawn. Their length should be proportional to the espective contour values. Then draw a free-hand line connecting the tips of these lines.Erase vertical lines extending beyond topographic profile.
To calculate the dip of a rock bed graphically a contour is selected which cuts the particular rock boundary at two points. A line which is called Strike or trend or bearing of beds connects these two points. Two Strike lines from contours of different values are drawn for the same geological boundary. Then the distance between them along AB section line is measured.
Then a line having the same length is drawn on the plain paper somewhere below the profile already made. From one end of the line a perpendicular line of length equal to the strike of interval is drawn with reference to the map scale. The angle formed by joining its top with the other end of the line will be angle of dip; its directions will be from the strike line of higher value to the one that has the lower value. Thus dip of various rock beds shown on the map are to be determined.
Now the map is folded along the AB line and is placed over the base line of the profile that is constructed.
The points of intersection of the boundary lines between different beds and the AB line are transferred onto the profile. From these points lines are drawn according to the Dip of the respective boundary surfaces. This is usually done by drawing angles of Dip first at the base line and then drawing parallel lines from the corresponding points at the surface profile using tools available in a geometry box.
