Question
A circuit consists of a battery connected to three resistors (65 , 30 , and 170 ) in parallel. The total current through the resistors is 1.7 A .
Part A
Find the emf of the battery.
Express your answer using two significant figures.
Part B
Find the current through 65 resistor.
Express your answer using two significant figures.
Part C
Find the current through 30 resistor.
Express your answer using two significant figures.
Part D
Find the current through 170 resistor.
Express your answer using two significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
Parallel resistances so the equivilant resistance is (1/65 + 1/30 + 1/170)^-1 = 15.872 ohms.
Apply ohms law for the emf=1.7x15.872 = 26.9824 V
the current through each resistor use ohms law again (knowing they're in parallel they have the same voltage)
the current through 65 resistor is 26.9824/65 = 0.415A
the current through 30 resistor is 26.9824/30 = 0.899A
the current through 170 resistor is 26.9824/170= 0.1587A
