Question
Trailer in the desert
A laboratory for magnetoplasma rocket tests is built in a desert, where rare but intense electrical storms occur. The part of the laboratory where the rockets are tested is built inside of a large, grounded trailer. The trailer is made of a conducting material. No external electric fields affect the measurements performed in the lab. The trailer is shielded from external electric fields (in other words, the electric field inside the trailer is zero). Why? Explain your answer in terms of Gauss’s Law.
Explanation / Answer
If give charge to any metal, the charge always resides on its surface.
so, when the trailer made of conducting material, when it gets charge from outside, the charge resides on surface only.
so, inside the charge, Qin = 0
Now Imagine a closed surface just inside the trailer.
if we use Gauss' law just inside,
net elctric flux = Qin/esoilon
E*A = Qin/epsilon
E*A = 0/epilon
==> E = 0
It means, inside the trailer elctric field is zero.
