Question
A hunter is between two vertical stone walls (1020 meters from wall A and 170 meters from wall B) when he fires his rifle at t=0. Assume the veloicty of sound is 340 m/sec. Draw a picture illustrating this phenomenon and determine the times at which the hunter hears the first three echoes.
My notes: I have drawn a beginning to this in the image below. I am stuck however, so please tell me where to go from here. Please, redraw this picture if you can and explain how you found T (time of echo)1, 2 and 3.
Please show the steps. Thank You.
Explanation / Answer
first echo:
first echo will be heard for the sound reflected from the nearest wall
time taken=2*distance travelled/speed of sound
=2*170/340=1 second
second echo: second echo will be heard for the sound reflected from the farthest wall
time taken=2*distance travelled/speed of sound
=2*1020/340=6 seconds
third echo:
third echo will be reflection of the second echo from the other wall
so time taken after the initial 6 seconds=(2*170/340)=1 seconds
so third echo will be heard in 6+1=7 seconds
so first three echos will be heard at 1,6 and 7 seconds
