Question
Point P is equidistant from two sources transmitting at the same frequency. At P, the sound level of source 1 is 100 dB; I2, the intensity of source 2 is twice that of source 1, I1. Find the sound level of source 2 at P.
Using the data from the above problem, find the intensity at point P as well.
I think the equation I should be using is: 10 log (I/Io) but I am not positive how to use that to find the answer to this question. If you find the correct answer, please show all steps you used in finding it. I do not understand where exactly to start with this problem. Thank You.
Explanation / Answer
source 1 intensity level
B1=10*log(Io/I1) ----(1)
and
source 2 intensity level
B2=10*log(Io/I2) ----(2)
and
given I2=2*I1
from (1) and (2)
B1/B2=log(I2/I1)
B1/B2=log(2*I1/I1)
B1/B2=log(2)
100/B2=log(2)
===> B2=332.2 dB
sound intensity of source2 at p is, B2=332.2 dB
