(4) This is an acid-base reaction. Mg is base and HCl is acid. This can also be seen as redox reaction.

(5) Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) ----> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)

(6) oxidation redox reaction Mg -----> Mg2+ + 2e-

   reduction redox reaction   2H+ + 2e- -----> H2

(7) adding the two redox reaction in (6) and canceling the electrons, we get the net ionic equation

    Mg + 2H+ -----> Mg2+ + H2
