Question

During the game, you are standing on the sidelines. You observe player 1 holding the ball and standing still. Player 1 is hit from behind by player 2 who is moving at a speed of 8 m/s before the collision. After the collision, player 1 has a velocity of 3.6 m/s.

a. If Player 1 has a mass of 100 kg and Player 2 has a mass of 60 kg, then what is player 2’s velocity after the collision?

b. If the players are in contact for 0.2 second, what was the force experienced by each player?

c. Does your answer overestimate, underestimate, or provide good prediction for the peak force during the impact. Explain why.

Explanation / Answer

as given:

Player 1 has a mass of 100 kg

player 1 initial speed = 0 m/s and speed after collision = 3.6 m/s

Player 2 has a mass of 60 kg and initial speed = 8 m/s and final speed = ???

according to conservation of momentum

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2

or, 100x0 + 60x8 = 100x3.6 + 60xv2

or, v2 = 2.0 m/s............this is player 2’s velocity after the collision...........................ans
