Question

If someone shows worked out solutions for correct answer, I will rate! Thank you very much!

Two small plastic balls hang from threads of negligible mass. Each ball has a mass of 0.250 g and a charge of magnitude q. The balls are attracted to each other, and the threads attached to the balls make an angle of 20.0 degree with the vertical, as shown in the figure. Find the magnitude of the electric force acting on each ball. F = 6.06 middot 10^-4 N Find the tension in each of the threads. T = N Find the magnitude of the charge on the balls. q = 5.32 nC

Explanation / Answer

Do the free body diagram T in the thread, Weight down and Electric force to the left for the negative charge , Then balance the forces

Tcos 20 = Fe

T sin20 = 0.250*10^-3*9.8

T= 0.250*10^-3*9.8/sin20

a) so Fe= 0.250*10^-3*9.8*cos20/sin 20 = 0.00673 N = 6.7*10^-3 N

b) T= 8.38*10^-4 N

c) 6.7*10^-3= 9*10^9*q^2/(0.0205)^2

q= 1.76*10^-8 C = 17.6 nC
