Question
From left to right, the North-South streets shown are Buchannan (1), Laguna (2), Octavia (3), Gough (4) and Franklin (5). From top to bottom, the East-West streets shown are Broadway (A), Pacific (B), Jackson (C), Washington (D), Clay (E) and Sacramento (F) (a) In the part of town shown in the map below, which street(s) have the steepest runs? Which has the most level sections? Explain your answers (b) How steep is the steepest street at its steepest (i.e., what is its slop in feet/mile- slope is rise over run)? (c) Which would take more work (in the physics sense): Walking 3 blocks for Laguna & Jackson, or one block west from Clay and Franklin? Explain your answer. 2 4Explanation / Answer
a) In the map the given area (lafayette square) the area contains contours of 300,325,350 and 375 ft . hence the closer the contours give a steep region and wider contour distance suggest a gentle region . Hence streets of laguna(2) and wasgington(D) will be flat lands and streets of octavia(E) and clay(3) will be steeper ones.
b) the area is 0.4 sq miles
hence each side is= sqrt(0.4)=0.632 miles
each interstreet distance will be=0.632/5=0.126 miles
1mi=5280ft
inter contour horizontal distance for steepest part will be 0.126/5=0.025*5280=133.56 ft
hence steepest slope will be=arctan( 25/133.56)=10.59degree
for gentler part= arctan(25/267.12)=5.31 degrees
c)clay and flanklin would require more work as it will be steeper than the laguna and jackson
