Question

#51

Sketch electric field lines in the vicinity of two charges, Q and -4Q, located a small distance apart on the x axis. Two Point charges Q and +q (where q is positive) produce the net electric field shown at point P in Figure 17.56. The field points parallel to the line connecting the two charges. (a) What can you conclude about the sign and magnitude of Q? Explain your reasoning, (b) If the lower charge were negative instead, would it be possible for the field to have the direction shown in the figure? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

Since net EF is towards Q

a) this means Q is negatively charged

b) if the lower charge would have been negative , the direction would remain same but the magnitude of the EF would decrease.
