Question
Use your formulas from the class to answer the following simple questions. Please show ALL STEPS and CALCULATIONS.
(a) What is the magnitude of the electric field between the plates in your tube when the deflection voltage in 20 volts?
(b) What is the magnitude of the forces on the electrons between the plates in your tube when voltage is 20 volts?
(c) In question 2 what is the ratio of the electrical force to the weight of the electrons?
(d) With the accestation voltage set at 500 volts find the speed with which the electron entered the paltes
Explanation / Answer
let length of the tube = L m
a) electric field , E = V/L = 20/L v/m
b) force , F = qE = 1.6*10^-19*20/L = 32*10^-19/L opposite to the direction of electric field
c) F/We = 32*10^-19/(L*9.1*10^-31) = 3.51*10^12/L
d) PE = KE
=> qV = 0.5*m*v^2
=> 1.6*10^-19*500 = 0.5*9.1*10^-31*v^2
=> v = 13.25*10^6 m/s entering speed of electron.
