Question

Three 100 resistors are connected as shown in the figure. The maximum power that can safely be delivered to any one resistor is 24.5 W. 100 n 100 n 100 n (a) What is the maximum potential difference that can be applied to the terminals a and b? (b) For the voltage determined in part (a), what is the power delivered to each resistor? resistor on the left resistor at the top of the loop resistor at the bottom of the loop (c) What is the total power delivered to the combination of resistons? Explanation / Answer

for maximum potential, current should be maximum.

now, maximum current = I

then I2R = P

=> I = sqrt(24.5/100) = sqrt(0.245) = 0.494975 A

a) Vmax = IR + (I/2)R = (3/2)IR = 1.5 x 0.494975 x 100 = 74.246212 V

b) Power to Resistor on left = 24.5 W

power to resistor at top = 24.5/4 = 6.125 W

power to resistor at bottom = 24.5/4 = 6.125 W

c) total power = 24.5 + 6.125 + 6.125 = 36.75 W
