A positive charge q is placed on the y -axis at the location y = 3.0 m. Another positive charge is placed on they -axis at the location y = -3.0. The magnitude of the charge q = 7.0 muC. Which of the potential at the point P? Express your answer in Volts. A sphere encloses a total of +1 muC of charge. What is the electric flux through the surface of the sphere? What would be the electric flux through the surface of the sphere if you doubled the radius of the sphere? (The total charge inside stays the same.)

Explanation / Answer

The electric potential at P is the sum of the potentials due to the two charges.

Vp = V1 + V2

Vp = k q1/r1 + k q2/r2 = k (q1/r1 + q2/r2)

r1 = r2 = sqrt (3^2 + 4^2) = 5 m

Vp = 9 x 10^9 x 10^-6 (7/5 + 7/5) = 2.52 x 10^4 V

Hence, Vp = 2.52 x 10^4 Volts.
