Question

A particle is traveling along the positive x-direction. If the particle is steadily decreasing in speed while maintaining this direction then...:

A) the displacement is pointing in the positive direction and the acceleration is pointing in the negative direction.

B) the velocity is in the negative x-direction and the acceleration is in the positive direction.

C) the velocity vs. time graph has a positive slope BUT the slope is decreasing with increasing time.

D) both the velocity and the displacement are in the negative x-direction.

E) the particle's acceleration is in the negative direction and the velocity vs. time graph has a decreasing slope.

Please explain! Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

A)the displacement is pointing in the positive direction and the acceleration is pointing in the negative direction.

Since the object continues to move in positive direction but the acceleration decreases. So the displacement will be along positive direction and due to retardation the acceleration would be negative.
