Rule of Nines (Burns)-Adult Head (4.5% anterior and 4.5% posterior)-9% Anterior Torso (9% superior and 9% inferior)-18% Posterior Torso (9% superior and 9% inferior)-18% Arms -9% each (4.5% anterior and 4.5% posterior) × 2-1S% Leg 18% each (996 anterior and 9% posterior) × 2-36 Perineum-1% AL 9 + 18 + 18 + 18 + 36 + 1-100% The rule of nines is used for estimating burn percentage. In the image below, both anterior and posterior views of the body are used to show the distribution of percentages per body segment. To estimate, identify the areas that are burned and add up the percentages assigned to these areas to determine the extent of the burn injury 4.5% 4.5%, 9% .5 .5 9% 9% 1 9%/19%/ 9%/19% FIGURE 6.48 The Rule of Nines Reference

Explanation / Answer

The rules of Nines is used to estimate the %burn in adults.

If you want to know the extent of burn, you just identify those regions, add up their percentages and you will get to know the extent of burn.

For example, if the person is having burns on arms and torso. Then for each arm is 9% which becomes 18% for two arms and for the torso region 18% accounts for both anterior and posterior region.

So in total it becomes 18% + 18% + 18% = 54%

The person is suffering from 54% burns.

In the same way you can calculate the % burn for any other region too.
