Question
Explain how predator and prey populations control each other. Your explanation should include discussion of things like population cycles and carrying capacities. What significant differences in relative population sizes would you expect between an ecosystem where the major predator was cold blooded, and an ecosystem where the major predator was warm blooded? For the sake of the exercise, assume that these two predators are about the same size and weight, and that both are exclusively carnivorous.
Explanation / Answer
Ans. The population of a place be it of; predator or prey changes due to abiotic and biotic factors, among the biotic factors; predators, diseases, food scarcity etc. prevent a population to sour towards infinity. The total of all these factors, prevent a pop. from growing at its maximum rate, is called environmental resistance or population regulation (Sustainability indicators). So population cycle which is the cycle of increasea and decrease of population of a species over a predictable period of time, is dependent upon the carrying capacity of an ecosystem, which is the size of the population that can be supported indefinitely upon the available resources and services of that ecosystem and the carrying capacity in turn will be dependent upon the cycle of resource replenishment which is in turn is depend upon the population of predator and prey .
