Question
French knights are Dover Castle While storming the castle, the knights attempt to lean a ladder against the castle wall For a brief moment the ladder is held still while making a theta = 30 degree with the vertical. A rope is tied to the top of the ladder for control. The rope makes an angle theta = 30 degree with the ladder. Then ladder has a mass m = 75 kg and length L = 9.2 m A) Draw all the forces on the diagram B) Write the net torque equation using the point at which the Udder touches the ground as the pivot point C) Write the force equations in the x and y directions D) What is magnitude of tension T in the rope? E) What are the forces in the x-direction hi and the force in the y-direction Fv on the ladder from the ground? F) If the rope had an original length of 16m and radius r-1.0cm. how much does the rope stretch .n the above situation? Young's modulus, E - 35x10^2 N/m^2.Explanation / Answer
All the forces are drawn correctly, just the normal force should pass through the base.
Writing the torque eqaution from the base.
mgL sin(30)/2 - Ft Lsin (30) = 0
Ft = mg/2 = 375 N
The force equations in the x y direction will be
mg + Ft sin(30) = N
Friction - Ft cos(30 ) = 0
Friction = 324 N (x direction)
N = 937.5 N (y direction)
