Question

Very much appreciated. I need help on these homework problems and I've visited my schools tutors but they're not confident in any of the help they give me and on some they just tried to "steer" me in the right direction and it wasn't helpful. I need this to study from to really understand this material. Very much appreciated. Explanation / Answer

mass m = 1 g = 10 -3 kg

Separation of spheres r = 3 cm =0.03 m

Accleration a = 175 m/s 2

Force F = ma

            = 175 x10 -3 N

We know F = Kqq ' /r 2

175 x10 -3 = (8.99x10 9 ) qq ' / 0.03 2

                 = 9.988 x10 12 qq '

         q q ' = 1.7519 x10 -14 -------( 1)

Total charge q + q ' = 0.3167 x10 -6 C         ----------( 2)

(q-q') 2 = (q+q') 2 - 4qq '

          = (0.3167 x10 -6) 2 -4(1.7519 x10 -14 )

          = 3.022 x10 -14

q -q ' = 1.738 x10 -7        ---------( 3)

[eq(2)+eq(3)]/2 ===>

[(q+q')+(q-q')]/2 = [(0.3167 x10 -6 )+(1.738 x10 -7 )]/2

                   q = 2.452 x10 -7 C

Substitute this in equation(3) you get ,

q ' = q - ( 1.738 x10 -7 )

   = ( 2.452 x10 -7)-(1.738 x10 -7 )

= 7.147 x10 -8 C
