Question
It takes bacteria 40 minutes to replicate their DNA and 20 minutes for septum formation and cell division. Some bacteria, however, have a doubling time that’s less than 60 minutes. How would the amount of DNA per cell differ for cells in Culture X and Culture Y? Culture X has a generation time of 30 minutes and Culture Y has a generation time of 100 minutes. Explain your answer in less than 40 words. Include which portion of the chromosome would be present in larger amounts (either the origin portion or the region farther away from the origin).
Explanation / Answer
Generation time is the time required by the bacteria to double its number in a secified period of time. Generation is divided into two parts 2/3 part of which is used in doubling the chromosomes while 1/3 part of it is used for the septum formation.
Cells of the culture X will have less amount of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid)) content as compare to cells of the cuture Y as culture X has less generation time, which is 30 minutes while 'cuture Y' has comparatively longer generation time which is 100 minutes.
