Question

Two plane mirrors stand facing each other, 2.79 m apart, and a woman stands between them. The woman faces one of the mirrors from a distance of 1.15 m and holds her left arm out to the side of her body with the palm of her left hand facing the closer mirror.

(a) What is the apparent position of the closest image of her left hand, measured perpendicularly from the surface of the mirror in front of her?
m behind the nearer mirror

(c) What is the position of the next image?
m behind the nearer mirror

(e) What is the position of the third closest image?
m behind the nearer mirror

Explanation / Answer

a)

Given the orientation of the woman between the mirrors 2.79 m between them. We will determine where the images will be located in various situations. When we stand infront of a plane mirror, the image produced is upright, having the same size, the distance is as far from object behind the mirror (virtual) and il laterally inverted. The left and right parts are interchanged in the image.

The first case is that woman stands 1.15 m infront of the mirror, so the image will be formed 1.15 meters behind the mirror. Laterally inverted.

b)

This image will be refelcted to the opposite mirror which located 2.79 from the surface of the nearest mirror. So the distance of the object from the second mirror will be 2.79 m + 1.15 m = 3.94 m. So the second image will appear 3.94 meters behind the farther mirror. The image will be laterally inverted too. It will have the same orientation as the woman now.

e)

The third image wll be formed on the near mirror. We need to determine how far is the object from the first mirror. We said the image is 3.94 m behind the second mirror, so that will be (3.94 m + 2.79 m = 6.73m) 6.73 m away from the first mirror. So the image (3) will be formed 6.73 meters behind the first mirror. Here the image will be laterally inverted also.
