Question
3. A water tank has an open top. Due to a freak shotgun accident two puncture holes develop in the side of the tank at the locations shown in the diagram below. (a) What is the pressure of the water as it sprays out of the top hole? Hint: We want the pressure once the water has left the tank and is in contact with the external environment. (b) What is the pressure of the water as it sprays out of the hole closer to the tank’s bottom? (c) What is the speed of the water leaving the top hole? (d) What is the speed of the water spraying out of the bottom hole? (e) Calculate the distance that the streams of water spraying from each hole travel before hitting the ground if the top surface is 8 m above the ground. Assume the only significant force acting on the droplets of water once outside the tank is gravity and that the leaks are tiny compared to the surface area of the water in the tank.

(a)
Pressure outside upper hole is atmospheric pressure. Patm.
(b)
Same as above.
(c)
Using Bernoullie's equation,
p1-p2/rho*g =V^2/2
(rho*g*h)rho*g =V^2/2
h =V^2/2=2
v =2 m/s.
(d)
Same way,
h =V^2/2=5
v =3.65 m/s
