Question
3. A student performed an experiment similar to the one that you will perform but used different solutions. The student's data are presented in the table below. Student data for estimating the pH of solutions indicator color Red yellow 0.1M Thymol Methyl Bromothymol solution Blue NaNOs rec NaNO2 green HNO3 red HNO2 Blue yellow yellowblue red yellow orange red yellow (1) Is a 0.1M NaNO2 solution acidic or basic? What experimental evidence supports your answer? (2) List the acidic solution(s) studied by the student What experimental evidence supports your r?Explanation / Answer
(1) 0.1M NaNO2 is basic in nature. This is because it gives a green color with indicator thymol blue, yellow with methyl red and blue with bromothymol blue. If we consider the pH indicator chart, we can easily see that these colors are observed with mentioned indicators if the pH is in the range 6.2-8 and this range is for bases
(2) The acidic solutions studied by the student are : HNO3 and HNO2. This is because a 0.1M solution of these solutions give a red and orange color respectively with thymol blue which is characteristic for acids and red color with indicator methyl red which again shows that these are acidic solutions.
