Explanation / Answer

We know that diffusion depends on three factors

From procedure A, the medium of diffusion is same i.e. agar agar. Also from diameters it is clear that both the compounds are permeable.

If we check out the diffusion diameters of malachite green and potassium permanganate , the diameters were observed to be larger for potassium permanganate.

This is due to the fact, that potassium permanganate (158 g/mol) is having lesser molecular weight than malachite green (356 g/mol).

So, it can be concluded that if temperature and medium of diffusion remains same, the rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to molecular weight of diffusing molecule.

Also, on varying temperature, diffusion rate will be more at higher temperatures.

So, at higher temperatures, the diffusion diameters should be higher for both the substances.

Effect of molecular weight on diffusion rate:

Rate of diffusion is diffusion varies inversely with molecular weight. It is because, lesser is the molecular weight, faster will be the movement of that substance. Similarly, higher is the molecular weight, slower will be the movement of that substance.

Effect of temperature on diffusion rate:

Rate of diffusion is directly proportional to temperature i.e.rate if diffusion is higher at higher temperatures. This is because at higher temperature kinetic energy will also be high and Brownian movement is faster which aids in diffusion of molecule.
