Question

You are employed as a research assistant at a Medical University. Your advisor has found an animal with turquoise eyes, that are products from a recessive gene, with a Mendelian pattern of inheritance. Although the species is extinct in the wild, and you and your team have been unable to find any males, your specimen animal is young and still of reproductive age. Your advisor has told you that he wants you to determine whether the tissues in the eye can be used to regenerate a whole animal before spending any additional time working on the project. Based on your credentials as an embryologist, you decide that such an experiment is or is not realistic? Will the animal have turquoise eyes?

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

Regeneration of whole animal is not possible with the eye tissue. Eye cells are diploid due to mitosis.Hence, it can not be used in cloning of animals.

On the other hand, stem cells can used in order to regenerate whole animal but this process is very complex.

Pretend if this generation occur than eye color of animal will be turquoise and probabilities are:

If animal is homozygous than genotype=rr

Hence ,chances of offspring with torquoise color eye is 100%
