Question

Virulent bacteri Oilled) 10. To identify the molecule responsible for transforming nonvirulent bacteria into virulent ones, Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty did the following experiment. They killed the virulent bacteria and prepared an extract to transform nonvirulent bacteria into virulent ones. The extract was divided in four fractions. One fraction was left untreated and the other three were treated with enzymes that degrade RNA, proteins and DNA respectively. The results are shown in the figure. Explain how the result would be different IF INSTEAD, the molecules responsible for transformation were RNase Protease Nonvirulent Nonvirulent Nonvirulent Nonvirulent bacteria bacteria bacteria bacteria proteins. Explanation / Answer

In the 4th fraction where DNase enzymes was used, only non virulent bacteria was found because DNase has destroyed virulent bacteria DNA that used to caused transformation.DNA was the reason due to which non virulent bacteria have transformed into virulent ones.

If proteins were responsible for transformation then the fraction treated with proteases will have only non virulent bacteria . While all others fraction will have virulent and non virulent bacteria.Protease enzymes would degrade proteins and protein would not be able to transform non virulent bacteria into virulent. There would be no transformation in 3rd fraction due to protein degrading proteases enzyme .
