ACTION POTENTIALS WORK SHEET 1. On the top plot, label the following values / areas. Resting membrane potential Threshold voltage Sub threshold voltage 2. On the second plot label: Na Curve -K Curve 3. On the Third Plot label Na Curve K Curve soma gna na Why does one curve have 0.15 positive values while the other has negative? 0.005 20 0.005 0.5 0.3 0.1 0.1 0.3 0.5 il leak 4. On the Fourth Plot label: -Na activation Na inactivation 20 K activation -Absolute refractory Period 0.8 0.6 0.4 02 -Relative refractory Period What governs the absolute and relative refractory periods? 500 300 100 100 axon ccl i hy are they important? 10 15 300 500Explanation / Answer
1. Physical change in skin conductivity is caused due to pyschological and physiological arousal. Sweat glands or sympathetic nerves are activated by such responses which in turn modulate the conductivity of the skin.
2. Sympathetic nervous system is activated upon emotional or physiological stimulus. This is turm controls the sweat glands which area activated. This causes a change in the electrical potential of the skin.
3. Increased electrical potential can be measured when the GSRs are activated. It can predict the emotional state of a person or his surroundings like fear, anxiety, orienting responses and sexual feelings. Such investigations can be used for criminal investigaiton studies and lie detector tests. Many biofeedback devices use this measure as an indicator of stress and manage a patient's condition.
