Question
Shows two very long (infinite) wires, wire 1 and wire 2, which each carry an electric current perpendicularly through the page. In the figure d1 = 1.80 cm and d2 = 3.90 cm and the current i wire #1 is 2.80 A. The net magnetic field at point P due to the currents in wires 1 and 2 is zero. Determine the magnitude of the current in wire 2? Give your answer in the form "a.bc unit" Unit is from the S.I. system of measurements. Give the direction of the current in wire 2 in the form "into the page" or "out of the page".Explanation / Answer
the nuetral point is outside the conductors and on the side of the cundctor carrying slmaller current
so the cundctors carry currents in opposite direction
the distance of the nuetral piont from smaller current is
x = d / [(i2 / i1) - 1]
where x = 3.90 cm
d = 1.80 cm
i1 = ?
i2 = 2.8
3.9 = 1.8 / [(2.8 / i1) - 1]
solving for i1 we get
i1 = 1.231 A
the nuetral point will be nearer to the conductor carrying smaller current
direction is
wire 1 into the plane of the paper and
wire 2 is out of the plane of the paper
