Question

please help! thank you!

Two 150 cm long vertical tubes have identical dimensions. One tube is plastic and the other tube is aluminum (like the one used in class). A magnet dropped through the plastic tube exits the lower end with a speed of 5.42 m/s. The same magnet dropped through the aluminum tube exits the lower end with a much lower speed. Explain what happened to the gravitational potential energy of the magnet that does not become kinetic energy of the magnet as it falls through the aluminum tube.

Explanation / Answer

inside the plastic tube , as the magnet falls , the gravitational potential energy totally converts to kinetic energy as their is no resistive force to resist the downward motion of magnet .

in case of aluminium , as the magnet falls , the magnetic flux linked with the tubve changes and the tube induces a current to produce its own magnetic field which resist the motion of magnet in down direction by applying magnetic force. so the some gravitational potential energy is used in overcoming this magnetic force. hence the kinetic energy is less as compared to the plastic tube
