Question
Four ideal polarizers are placed in succession with their axes vertical, at 30degree to the vertical, at 60degree to the vertical, and at 90degree to the vertical respectively. (a) Calculate what fraction of the incident unpolarized light I_0 is transmitted by the four polarizers. times I_0 (b) Can the transmitted light be decreased by removing one of the polarizers? If so, which one(s) could cause this (individually)? (Select all that apply.) first second third fourth none of these (c) Can the transmitted light intensity be extinguished by removing polarizers? If so, which one(s)? first second third fourth none of theseExplanation / Answer
a) when polarized passes through the 1st polarizer
i1 = i0/2
i2 = i1cos^230
i3 = i2 cos^2 30
i4 = i3 cos^2 30
itot = i0/2*(cos^2 30)^3 = 0.21 i0
b) lets remove second polarizer itot = i0/2(cos^260*cos^2 30 = 0.094 i0 it works
we could also remove the 3rd polarizer and get the same result
there fore removing either 2 or 3 will decrease the intensity
c) light can be extinguished by removing 2 and 3 then we have two crossed polarizers and intensity is zero.
