Question
An oscillator creates periodic waves on two strings made of the same material. The tension is the same in both strings. Part A If the strings have different thicknesses, which of the following parameters, if any, will be different in the two strings? Check alll that apply A) wave frequency B) wave speed C) wavelength D) none of the above Part B If the strings have the same thickness but different lengths, which of the following parameters, if any, will be different in the two strings? Check all that apply A) wave frequency B) wave speed C) wavelength D) none of the aboveExplanation / Answer
Part A:
B. wave speed and C. wavelength both apply
Part B:
D. none of the above
The frequency of the fundamental node of vibration is = [1/ 2L]* [T /m]
Material is the same and hence m is the same.
Given Tension is the same and hence T is the same.
Hence frequency is inversely proportional to the length of the wire. Or L is constant.
The string vibrates only according to the frequency of the oscillator; hence the frequency is also constant.
Resonance occurs if the natural frequency of the string coincides with the freqency of the oscillator.
In any case, the frequency of the string equals the frequency of the oscillator and hence the frequency is constant.
When frequency is constant, naturally the wavelenght is also constant.
Hence frequency, wavelength and speed are all constant and they will not vary. The question whether resonance occurs or not is irrelevant here.
The answer is none of the above.
