Question
Shown below is a wheel with radius R = .13m suspended off the ground. Attempts to turn the wheel clockwise are prevented by a rope which is tied to the ground and to a point on the wheel. This rope has a maximum tension of 500N and will break under any more tension. I’m going to try and break that rope and spin the wheel by using a spring that I’ve attached to the side of the wheel. The unstretched spring is .1 m long. After pulling the loose edge of the spring straight down .5m the rope breaks and the wheel begins to rotate. What was the spring constant of the spring?
.1m 06m 13mExplanation / Answer
Let tension in the rope be 500N
And force due to spring = kx = k/2
Now applying torque balance on the system
k*.13/2 = 500*0.06
k = 461.538 N/m
