Question
Two forces equal in magnitude and opposite in direction, acting on an object at two different points, form what is called a couple. Two antiparallel forces with equal magnitudes_1 = F_2 =7.90 N are applied to a rod as shown in the figure (Figure1). What should the distance l between the forces be if they are to provide a net torque of 5.20 N m about the left end of the rod? Is the sense of this torque clockwise or counterclockwise? Repeat for a pivot at the point on the rod where F_2 is applied.Explanation / Answer
(a)
Net torque acting on the rod is,
tow = 3*F1 - (3+L) * F2
5.2= 3*7.9 - (3+L) * 7.9
Solve for L
L= 0.658 m
----------------------------
(b)
Net torque is clockwise.
---------
(c)
Net torque acting on the rod is,
tow =L*F1
5.2 = L * 7.9
L = 0.658 m
