Please show all work For all the questions 7. In each of scenario below, decode whether an action potential be produced. below (a-c), the postsynaptic neuron has a resting membrane potential of -70 mV. Explain your decisions. Fifteen neurons synapse on one postsynaptic neuron. At the trigger zone, 11 of the neurons produce epsps of 2 mV each and the other four produce ipsp of 3 mV each. The threshold for the postsynaptic cell is -50 mV a. Twelve neurons synapse on one postsynaptic neuron. At the trigger zone, 10 of the neurons produce epsps of 2 mV each and the other two produce ipsp of 3 mV each. The threshold for the postsynaptic cell is 60 mv. b. Fifteen neurons synapse on one postsynaptic neuron. At the trigger zone, 13 of the neurons produce epsps of 3 mV each and two produces ipsps of 9 mV. The threshold for the postsynaptic cell is -50 mV. c.Explanation / Answer
EPSP stands for exitatory postsynaptic potential. It exites the neuron and generate action potential by causing depolarisation.
IPSP stands for inhibitory postsynaptic potential. It inhibits the action potential generally by causing hyperpolarisation.
The negative sign just indicates that the inner membrane of the cell is negatively charges it does not tell us about magnitude of charge.
a) here the threshold value is - 50mV that is cell needs atleast 20mV potential to generate action potential. EPSP of 11 neuron is 2mV each so in total 22mV and IPSP of 4 neuron is 3mV each ie. 12 mV in total. So net potental will be somewhat 10 mV. So, no action potential.
B) Here threshold is - 60 mV so, needs 10mV to generate action potential. If we see net potential it will be around 14mV. From 10 epsp which has 2mV each and 2 ipsp with 3mV each. So, Action potential will be generated.
C) 13 epsp with 3mV and 2 ipsp with 9mV that is 21mV potenial will be generated in total. And for crossing the threshold we need only 20mV potential. So action potential will be generated.
