Explanation / Answer

Mass of car = 1240 kg

Mass of trailer = 360 kg

The car exerts a horizontal force of 3.6 × 103 N against the ground in order to accelerate.

Part A

An effective friction coefficient of 0.16 for the trailer.

Let force exerted by car on the trailer is = F

Since the car and the trailer is attached both will move with the same acceleration.

Acceleration = Net Force / Total mass

Net Force =  3.6 × 103 - Friction force on trailer

= 3600 - 0.16*300*9.8

= 3600 - 470.4

=3129.6 N

Acceleration = Net Force / Total mass

= 3129.6 / (1600) = 1.956 m/s2

Now F -  Friction force on trailer = 360*1.956

F =  470.4 + 704.16 = 1174.56 N
