Question

You watched a video oil YouTube showing a pair of strong, circular bar magnets attached to either end of a battery. When this setup is placed on a conducting surface like an aluminium sheet, it starts to roll without any additional pushing or prodding. Are the magnets attached to the ends of the battery with like poles facing each other or opposite poles facing each other? Why dot's that matter? Where does the setup get its energy to roll? What is the "circuit" that allows electric current to flow and how do the magnets then act on this current to produce forces that ultimately push the system? [Do not try to answer this question quantitatively as the actual system is probably too hard to analyse in detail. Focus on the concepts and principles that allow you to explain what is happening.]

Explanation / Answer

The two magnets are arranged with same poles. The current flowing through the same poles will attract each other.

The set up gets magnetic energy to roll on its own.

Due to electromagnetic induction the entire process takes place.
