Question
THE ANSWER IS IN THE QUESTION. A 1.19 kg ball is connected by means of two ideal strings to a horizontal, rotating rod. The strings are tied to the rod and are taut. The right string is 27.0 cm long and has a tension of 30.5 N, and it makes an angle ?2 = 51.0° with the rod, while the left string makes an angle ?1 = 60.0° angle with the rod. At the instant shown the ball is at its lowest point. (a) What is the tension in the left-hand string? (b) What is the speed of the ball? And the answers are 38.4 N and 2.83 m/s. I just don't know how to arrive at those answers.
Explanation / Answer
at lowest point
vertical forces
let tension in left string be T1
mv^2 / r + mg = T1 * sin(theta1) + T2 * sin(theta2)
1.19 * v^2 / (0.27 * sin(51)) + 1.19 * 9.8 = T1 * sin(60) + 30.5 * sin(51)
horizontal forces
T1 * cos(60) = 30.5 * cos(51)
on solving we'll get
speed v = 2.83 m/s
tension T1 = 38.4 N
