Q1: What is the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics Q2: Define and compare the characteristics of the mean, the median and the mode Q3: What is a histogram? How is it different from a bar chart Q4: Discuss the use of bar charts and line graphs Q5: Define the following: A. Interquartile range B. Box-plot

Explanation / Answer

1.Descriptive statistics: It describes data for charts or graphs.hence they are the functions of sample data which are intrinsically interested in describing data.the classic include mean, minimum, maximum, median, kurtosis, standard deviation, skew and median.in contrast descriptive statistics estimate population parameters intersically. INFERENTIAL STATISTICS :these are th function of sample data which makes inference or predictions. this is usually draw prediction of hypothesis about a population parameter 2.mean median mode are used to describe the central tendency of large data.to find the mean add all values in data and divide by no of blues added.to find median arrange the values in list and see which value is appears in middle of the list.to find mode see which value is used more often. mean median and mode are all different from each other . 3.histogram is used for representing the distribution of numerical data .it is different from bar graph as it has two variables and histogram has only one variable .histogram shows numerical data whereas bar chart shows categorical data.histogram has no gaps in gaps between bars but bar chart has gaps in between bars. 4.bar charts are used to compare between groups over time.line graph is used to compare changes over a same period of time in more than one group . 5.interquartile range is also known as midspread or technically H-spread,in descriptive statistics.it is a measure of variability. IQR=Q3-Q1. B.box plot in descriptive statistics is a method of graphically showing groups of numerical data through quartiles.
