Question

A centrifuge is a common laboratory instrument that separates components of differing densities in solution. This is accomplished by spinning a sample around in a circle with a large angular speed. Suppose that after a centrifuge in a medical laboratory is turned off, it continues to rotate with a constant angular deceleration for 10.2 s before coming to rest. Part A If its initial angular speed was 3800 rpm , what is the magnitude of its angular deceleration? Part B How many revolutions did the centrifuge complete after being turned off? A0 = 323 rev My Answers Give Up Correct

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

time taken , t = 10.2 s

a) initial angular speed , wi = 3800 rpm

wi = 3800/60 rev/s

wi = 63.33 rev/s

Using first equation of motion

wf = wi + alpha * t

0 = 63.33 + alpha * 10.2

alpha = - 6.21 rev/s^2

the magnitude of angular acceleration is 6.21 rev/s^2

part B)

let the number of revolutions is theta

Using second equation of motion

theta = wi * t + 0.5 alpha *t^2

theta = 63.33 * 10.2 - 0.5 * 6.21 * 10.2^2

theta = 322.8 rev

it will make 322.9 revs
