..ooo Verizon 38% D + 11:26 AM session.masteringphysics.com Creating a Standing Wave MasteringPhysics Creating a Standing Wave Learning Goal: To see how two traveling waves of the same frequency create a standing wave. Consider a traveling wave described by the formula vi(x,t) -Asin(k ut) This function might represent the lateral displacement of a string, a local electric field, the position of the surface of a body of water, or any of a number of other physical manifestations of waves Part A Which one of the following statements about the wave described in the problem introduction is correct? The wave is traveling in the + direction. The wave is traveling in the direction. The wave is oscillating but not traveling. The wave is traveling but not o scillating. Submit Give Up Give OP

Explanation / Answer

As per chegg guidelines i have solved first three parts

Part A

putting t=0 and t=1 in above equation of travelling wave ,we found that wave is travelling in +x direction.Put t=0 we get y=Asin(kx) and then put t=1 we get y=Asin(kx-1) so wave is travelling in +x direction

Part B

Wave of same magnitude but opposite direction is y=Asin(kx+wt) as at t=0,y=kx and at t=1 ,y=Asin(kx+w) which saws that this wave will travel in -x direction

Part C

y1(x,t)+y2(x,t)=Asin(kx-wt)+Asin(kx+wt)=A(2sin(kx)cos(wt))=2Asin(kx)cos(wt)

ye(x)=2Asin(kx)

yt(t)=cos(wt)
