Question
So, in the most literal sense, what does the word evolution mean? Please choose 1 piece of evidence that you feel makes the theory of evolution solid Considering what you learned about evolution in Chapter 11, should we take antibiotics for every little sickness? Are we promoting evolution? Could this "create" a "super bug"? Please remember to follow the guidelines for discussion posting (see grading policies). Your original answer must be posted by the Thursday before the due date and contain at least 150 words and your response to another person's post must contain at least 50 words. Evolution refers to decent with modification.
When an organism is subjected to selection pressure over a long period of time, it may accumulate beneficial mutations that make it adaptable to the prevailing conditions and become successful. If more mutations are accumulated, it may evolve into a new species.
Molecular evolution is essentially a change in the genomic sequence that enables an organism to acquire new traits.
Pieces of evidence for evolution:
1. The embryonic stages of most of the vertebrates look similar in the early stages which suggest that all vertebrates have evolved from a common ancestor.
2. Fossils provide information about missing connecting links between plant/animal groups
3. All organisms are essentially composed of same biomolecules and exhibit a similar metabolism
It is not advisable to take antibiotics for every single sickness. The presence of antibiotics may act as a selection pressure and the causative pathogens may acquire resistance to the persistent antibiotic. This may lead to the evolution of drug resistance and the appearance of superbugs.
