Question
A wagon with two boxes of gold, having total mass 300 kg, is cut loose from the horses by an outlaw when the wagon is at rest 50 m up a 6.0 ? slope (see the figure(Figure 1) ). The outlaw plans to have the wagon roll down the slope and across the level ground, and then fall into a canyon where his confederates wait. But in a tree 40 m from the canyon edge wait the Lone Ranger (mass 75.0 kg) and Tonto (mass 60.0 kg). They drop vertically into the wagon as it passes beneath them.
Part C
If not, does it increase or decrease, and by how much? If conserved type 0.
Express your answer using two significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
a) h = 50 sin 6 = 5.23m
vi = sqrt(2gh)
vi = 10.1m/s
mc * v = mcf * vf
vf = mc * v/ mcf
vf = 6.97m/s
6.97m/s * 5s = 34.8m, so it looks like they can make it
b) Initial KE=0.5*m*vi2=0.5*300*(10.1)2=1.54 * 104 J
Final KE=0.5*m*vf2= 0.5*(300+75+60)*(6.97)2 =1.06 * 104 J
Hence intial and final KE is not same
c) The change in kinetic energy =(1.54-1.06)*104 J=4800J
i.e. KE decrease 4800 J
