Question

Your lab partner used a convex lens to produce an image with di = 25 cm and hi = 4.0 cm. You are examining a concave lens with a focal length of 15 cm. You place the concave lens between the convex lens and the original image, 10 cm from the image. To your surprise, you see a real image on the wall that is larger than the object. You are told that the image from the convex lens is now the object for the concave lens, and because it is on the opposite side of the concave lens, it is a virtual object. Use these hints to find the new image position and image height and to predict whether the concave lens changed the orientation of the original image.

Explanation / Answer

for concave lens

object distance = s2 = -10 cm

focal length f2 = -15 cm

from lens equation

1/s2 + 1/s2' = 1/f

-1/10 + 1/s2' = -1/15

s2' = 30 cm   <<-answer

M = s2'/s2 = 30/10 = 3

M2 = h2i/h1i

3 = h2i/4

h2i = 12 cm <<------answer

concave lens chnaged the orientation
