Question

inelastic collision

Block A and Block B are on a smooth-less table. Block A has a mass of 125g and initially moving 30.0 cm/s to the right. Block B has a mass of 175g, and initially moving to the left with an unknown initial speed. After the collision the carts stick together and are observed to move to the left at 16.0 cm/s.

a) What is the initial velocity of block B (answer in cm/s) ?

I got -48.9 cm/s

b) What is the impulse, by block A during the collision? Answer in Ns(kgm/s)

I got -0.0855 kgm/s

Explanation / Answer

mA = 125 g , mB = 175 g, uA =30cm/s , v= -16 cm/s

a) From conservation of momentum

mA*uA+mB*uB =mA*vA+mB*vB

(125*30) + (175*uB) = (125+175)(-16)

uB =- 48.9 cm/s

b) Impulse =change in momentum of A

= mA(v - uA) = (0.125)[-0.16-0.30]

Impulse= -0.0575 N.s
