Question

The circuits shown below contain identical bulbs and non-identical ideal batteries. When a student sets up the circuits shown below, she observes that bulb A is brighter than bulb B.

By this observation the student concludes that the voltage across bulb A is  ---Select--- greater than the voltage across bulb B. less than the voltage across bulb B. equal to the voltage across bulb B. Not enough information given.

A second bulb is added to each circuit as shown below.

The student notices that bulb A is now equal in brightness to bulb B. In terms of the voltage V2 across battery 2, the voltage V1 across battery 1 is

4V2, 2V2, 2V2/,V2 V2/2,V2/2,V2/4

The batteries are now swapped, as shown below.

The brightness of bulb A is now  ---Select--- greater than the brightness of bulb B. equal to the brightness of bulb B. less than the brightness of bulb B. Not enough information given.

Explanation / Answer

(1)

In this case, the  voltage across bulb A is greater than voltage across bulb B. Becasuse, A is brighter than B , implies that more current pass through A and it results in more voltage in accordace with Ohm's law. ( current is proportinal to voltage )

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(2)

In this case, both are equal bright. As another bulb is connected in parallelm the voltage in the second circuit be halved.V 2 /2

As current is same ( brightness ) , It implies that V1 = 2 V2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this case, batteries are swapped, The battery connected to B is at high voltage hence it is brighter than A

Thus, the brightness of A is less than brightness of B.
