Class Hw #5 work, Energy, Power, Some Friction Begin Date: 4/10/2015 12:00:00 AM-Due Date: 1 1/16/2015 1 1:59:00 PM End Date: 11/23/2015 12:00:00 AM Management 1 Help (8%) Problem 11: A block of mass m = 0.21 kg is set against a spring with a spring constant of k1 = 579 N/m which has been compressed by a distance of 0.1 m. Some distance in front of it, along a frictionless surface, is another spring with a spring constant of k2 = 461 N/m. Otheexpertta.com

Explanation / Answer

a) K1*l1 = k2*l2

l2 = 579×0.1/461 = 0.125 m

b) velocity of mass when it is just released from spring one

v^2-u^2= 2as (u=0 , a=F/m =579*0.1/0.21 =275.71 )

v^2 = 2×275.71×0.1

v = 7.42 m/s ( as the suface is frictionless the velocity remains same )

C) force exerted by compressed spring (F1)= 579*0.1 = 57.9 N

Force applied by mass on second spring (F2)=F1- Frictional force

F2 = 57.9-1.03=56.87

F2= k2*l2

l2= 56.87/461 =0.123 m
